A red flag is typically a very unexpected event from an otherwise routine type of medical interaction, a procedure, or a visit, or whatever it may be. Some of the most obvious things are when somebody arrives for a routine procedure and leaves the hospital with some kind of catastrophic injury or, even worse, dies in the hospital. The other types of red flags are perhaps a diagnosis of some condition that should have been diagnosed sooner because that person had been complaining of symptoms that were consistent with a potential diagnosis like that. The red flags are something that’s unexpected and after a long period of time where the doctor or healthcare providers either ignored or didn’t properly test for those symptoms, ultimately they’re diagnosed with something that’s terrible. Had it been diagnosed when they first started complaining of the symptoms, the treatment or outcome would have been much better.
