Surgical error is typically considered something that goes wrong during the actual surgery itself, either by the surgeon or the hospital personnel assisting, such as a circulating nurse or a scrub nurse. There are also a multitude of errors that can occur in the preoperative setting as someone is being prepared for surgery, or in the postop setting after they’ve been released into the anesthesia care unit, the post anesthesia care unit. But when we talk about surgical error specifically, we’re talking about that time period where the patient is in the operating room being operated on.
